[00:00:00] Dr. Julia Jingles: If you don't reinvent, life will eventually force your hand. You'll either change by choice or you'll change by crisis.
[00:00:13] Welcome to the Mindset Medicine Show, where I serve up no fluff, full dose truths to help you stop self-sacrificing. Stop over performing and start. Actually living your life fully, freely, and unapologetically. I'm your host, Dr. Julia Bowlin. I'm a physician, author, hypnotherapist, and the founder of Personal Awareness Medicine.
[00:00:33] In today's episode, it's not for the faint of heart. It's for those of you who are done with the surface level fixes who are tired of patching potholes, when what you really need is a new freaking road. Let me put it to you like this. If you don't reinvent, life will eventually force your hand. You'll either change by choice or you'll change by crisis.
[00:00:55] Now I'm not being dramatic for effect. This comes straight [00:01:00] from the trenches. I've sat with patients at the edges of their lives, people who waited too long to live authentically. People who said yes to everyone but themselves. People who shrunk so small that they could no longer find out red of who they really were.
[00:01:17] I've been that woman too. You see, there was a time I had a perfect checklist. Successful physician check, wife and mom, check, respected, check, exhausted, disconnected, spiritually bankrupt check. Yep. On paper, I had it all in my soul. I was running on fumes. And the worst part is I was performing wellness for the world while secretly burning out myself.
[00:01:44] So today, if you're nodding while your heart is screaming, yes, this is your invitation to stop playing small. Stop betraying yourself and start reinventing. So let's begin. I feel reinvention isn't optional. It's necessary. [00:02:00] There's this myth that's floating around, especially among high achievers and healthcare professionals just like you.
[00:02:05] Potentially that reinvention is for people who hit rock bottom. I. That's it for the Broke the loss to people who've totally crashed. Wrong. Reinvention is for the Aware. It's for the awake. It's for the brave enough to say this version of me. Well, she was necessary in the past, but she's no longer enough.
[00:02:26] Let me tell you about my mother. She's in her eighties. She's fiercely independent, brilliant, but she's had multiple fractures and she still refuses to use a caner walker now. She's not afraid of the physical pain, obviously, she's afraid of the identity shift. She equates using a walker with being old, with being irrelevant, with being less than capable.
[00:02:50] And in her words, I'm not an invalid, sound familiar. We all do this. We resist the new version of ourselves because it threatens the story we've clung [00:03:00] to for potentially decades. But what if that story is what's suffocating your soul? If you can, I'd like for you to take a moment and if you have a journal or open a notes app or just if you're driving operating machinery, just think about this.
[00:03:15] What part of your identity, your current identity, are you clinging to out of fear? Not freedom? Is it the overachiever, the fixer, the people pleaser? The martyr? What would you lose if you let that part of you go? What might you gain? Don't just listen to this podcast. Let's be in the moment. Pause, reflect and disrupt the default.
[00:03:41] For now. Take a moment. There are signs that you're overdue for a soul level upgrade. Let me tell you what reinvention doesn't look like. It doesn't always come with fanfare. It doesn't always scream midlife crisis. It's often very quiet, subtle, and [00:04:00] internal, and it usually starts with discomfort that you can't quite name.
[00:04:05] So let's name it. Today, here are five sneaky signs that you are overdue for a soul level upgrade. One, you're constantly irritated. But you don't know why. You snap at your partner. You roll your eyes in meetings, you avoid phone calls. You blame the traffic, the barista, the algorithms, but deep down, you're not mad at them.
[00:04:28] You're mad at your life, or more specifically the version of life that you're still tolerating. I once found myself sobbing in the middle of folding laundry, not because of the hawks, but because I realized I didn't even recognize the woman. Doing the folding anymore, my dreams had been buried under to-do lists.
[00:04:49] My soul was quietly suffocating in between patient notes and meetings. Here's another reason why you might feel like you need a soul level change. You [00:05:00] fantasize about running away, not in a dramatic way. More like if I could just start over somewhere, no one would expect anything from me. Or you think about quitting, selling everything, moving to the beach and starting a goat farm.
[00:05:14] Whatever. Now hear me. These aren't bad fantasies. They're clues. Clues that the life you've been living doesn't match the truth inside you anymore. It's not escapism. It's a subconscious. SOS. Here's another sign you can't get excited anymore. Even when things are fine, you get the raise and you feel numb.
[00:05:38] You finish the big project and you just wanna crawl in bed. You get complimented. Feel nothing. This is your nervous system saying, Hey, we've been doing the same thing in the same way for too long. I'm bored, I'm disconnected. I need something real. Excitement and [00:06:00] vitality are signs of alignment, and if they're gone, you're off course.
[00:06:05] Here's another sign. You need an upgrade. You're triggered by other people's growth. I'll say that again. You get triggered by other people's growth. Do you ever scrolled past someone who's lost weight, left a marriage, started a business, took a leap, and instead of feeling inspired, you felt annoyed. That annoyance, it's not envy.
[00:06:27] It's your potential knocking on your door. It's your future self saying that could be us, but you're too scared to move. Ouch. I know. But sometimes your discomfort isn't a threat. It's just an invitation. Here's another sign you might keep hitting invisible ceilings. You want more money, but you can't break past a certain number.
[00:06:51] You crave deeper relationships, but attract the same toxic patterns you push yourself, but burnout before your breakthroughs. [00:07:00] These ceilings aren't external. They're your internal programming. That's where hypnotherapy subconscious work and inner rewiring become non-negotiable. So it's story time. I wanna touch a little bit about my husband's journey through cancer when he was diagnosed with this cancer, tonsor, cancer of the neck.
[00:07:18] I'll be honest, my first instinct was to fix it. I went into full-blown doctor wife mode, green smoothies, anti-inflammatory diets, energetic healing, crazy well, crazy ass vitamin supplementation, acupuncture. I was recommending massage my cell regulation mat, you name it. But he didn't want that. He wanted to do it his way, and it wrecked me because here I was reinventing myself every day to survive the emotional whiplash.
[00:07:52] And he was just existing. It forced me to face something. You can't reinvent someone else. You can't force [00:08:00] evolution on others. You can only choose it for yourself. And it was in that moment, I chose peace over control. Reinvention for me meant letting go because I wanna get raw here. If you're willing, grab a journal or just sit and listen and think about this.
[00:08:20] Ask yourself, where am I expecting something or someone outside of me to change so I don't have to, where am I expecting something or someone outside of me to change so I don't have to? Is it your job, your partner, your kids, your finances, because of the truth? The upgrade you're waiting for isn't in change circumstances.
[00:08:42] It's in a change of self. Let that sink in, let it sting a little bit if it needs to, because your evolution is not about blame, it's about ownership. Okay, before we go dive deeper into ownership. I wanna do a quick reminder, [00:09:00] I'd like to do a hypnotherapy technique. This is called the pattern interrupt, and hypnotherapy isn't about swinging watches or clucking like a chicken.
[00:09:09] Well, unless that's your thing. And hey, no judgment here. But at its core, hypnotherapy is a relaxed, focused state of awareness where your subconscious is more open to new, empowering suggestions. It bypasses the busy, anxious brain, and it drops right into your truth centers where deep transformation begins, and it's one of the simplest, most powerful tool we use.
[00:09:34] The pattern interrupt. So the pattern interrupt is really the fact that your brain loves autopilot. It conserves energy by running on loops. Open and open, and closing and closing. Same thoughts equals same emotions equals same behaviors equals same results. That's great for brushing your teeth, but it's not so great when you're struck into patterns of overgiving, self abandoning, and [00:10:00] people pleasing.
[00:10:01] A pattern interrupt is a deliberate disruption of your normal habits or your internal dialogue. Think of it like slamming on the brakes in the middle of a thought loop. It's not about perfection, it's about waking up. So let's get a little gritty here. Here's some common patterns and how to interrupt them.
[00:10:18] Pattern. You wake up, you dread the day. You scroll your phone, you feel behind before you even peed. The interrupt is the moment your feet hit the floor, you say something to yourself. Today, I choose to reinvent, not repeat. I know this sounds a little cheesy, so here's another pattern. You might say yes automatically at work, even when you're drowning.
[00:10:42] So the interrupt might be, instead of saying just yes, automatically you say, let me check my energy, or my calendar, or my spouse, or my commitments before I commit. This creates a pause, a space for sovereignty, and it teaches your brain that you are not a knee-jerk fixer. [00:11:00] You are a conscious chooser. Pause.
[00:11:03] Let me check on that. Then I'll get back to you. That is big. That really changed me. 'cause in the past, I hate to say it, my knee jerk reaction was to say no to my kids. No matter what it was. It could be I needed a new pair of shoes. I'm like, no, no. It's because I was so tapped out, I didn't have anything left.
[00:11:21] So then it was like, okay, hang on, let me think about this for a day, and then call me again or get back with me again. So here's another pattern, interrupt. Maybe you collapse into Netflix or you're doing doom scrolling, or you're silently loathing yourself by the time it's 10:00 PM So here's an interrupt.
[00:11:37] Set a timer for 15 minutes after work. During that time, you must do something different. I. Blast music and dance. Take a five minute walk, sit in your car and just shut your eyes and set a timer. Maybe write a letter to your future self color with your kids instead of zoning out. Again, you're not trying to fix everything in the day.
[00:11:59] You're just [00:12:00] taking a break from the trance of automaticity. Alright, so why do these hypno therapies work? They work because as a nervous system plus subconscious explanation together, here's the science, your brain is constantly seeking confirmation of your identity. And if it sees you doing something unexpected, like saying no, when you usually say yes or choosing a movement over a meltdown, your brain has to reevaluate and it says something like this, well, maybe she's not who I thought she was.
[00:12:33] That's the crack in the identity wall where the light gets in and that's when reinvention starts. You can't think your way into new life. You have to act your way into a new belief. I. Right. So here's how I used pattern interrupts during a medical meltdown. This is a true story. During one of my worst burnout phases, I was still at the clinic seeing 25 to 30 people a day.
[00:12:56] I was sleep deprived, anxious, and emotionally [00:13:00] hollow, but smiling, always smiling. And then one day I walked into room three, and I couldn't remember why I was there. Not just the chart. I mean my entire purpose, I just stared at the patient. That was my breaking point. But instead of quitting, I started with a smallest pattern interrupt.
[00:13:20] Every morning before I opened my EMR, I placed my hand on my heart and I whispered to myself, I'm not a machine. I'm a healer. Five seconds, one sentence. Total identity disruption. I was not a machine. I'm a healer. And day by day that one shift helped me rewire the way I saw myself until I eventually rebuilt everything.
[00:13:45] 'cause I wanna make it real. If you have a second here, just grab a pencil and paper. If you're not driving operating machinery. You've heard me say this before. If you are. Just listen, what is one area in your life that's on autopilot and [00:14:00] stealing your spark? Think about that. Write about that. What's one area of your life that's on autopilot and it's stealing your spark?
[00:14:10] Once you've done that, write one simple pattern interrupt you're gonna use this week. You can make it weird. You can make it simple, but make it you. All right? Here's some prompts, for example. What's something you can say out loud to stop your mental spiral? Like if your brain is like just churning and churning, churning, what can you say out loud?
[00:14:28] It might just be, stop. Alright, what's one action that breaks a draining evening routine? It might be instead of getting ready for bed at nine or 10, maybe getting ready for bed at eight. Then putting on super silky, comfy clothes and maybe doing a really awesome book that you've been wanting to read instead of watching tv.
[00:14:51] What's one question you can ask yourself before people pleasing, whatever it might be. Keep it simple. What's a pattern interrupt that you [00:15:00] can do? Then do it. Not because you have to fix yourself, but because the real you is buried under an old code and it's time to reboot.
[00:15:14] If stress and overwhelm or that relentless inner critic has been running the show, it's time to take back control. You don't need another motivational quote or a feel good pep talk. You need a system, a tool, something that actually works when life gets messy. That's exactly why I created mindset medicine worksheets, no fluff, no filler.
[00:15:32] Just proven strategies that are powerfully designed to help you rewire your thoughts for clarity and confidence. Break the cycle of overwhelm in minutes. Set boundaries that stick without guilt and turn stress into focus and action. This isn't about theory, it's about real transformation. And the best part is each episode of this podcast comes with a worksheet designed specifically for what you're learning today.
[00:15:55] No more wondering how to apply this. It's all mapped out for you. And if you're ready to stop [00:16:00] spitting your wheels and start making real shifts, grab today's worksheet below because life's too short to stay stuck. Check out the episode specific worksheet in today's podcast. Show notes below. The link is right there for you.
[00:16:18] The real risk is regret not reinvention. Let's dismantle one of the biggest lies we've all been sold. It's too risky to change. Really, really. It's too risky to change. Is it riskier to leap into your next chapter or too rot in the one that's already over? But I'll tell you what is actually risky. Waking up at 60 and realizing you live a life designed by fear and not truth.
[00:16:46] It's dimming your brilliance because it makes other people comfortable. It's staying in a job, a relationship, or a routine that quietly kills your spirit one day, one hour at a time. We glorify [00:17:00] safety, but the real cost of safety is soul suppression. I'm sorry to say that it's real. It's true. I really feel that way.
[00:17:09] So. Here's a story about what regret looks like in real time. You might not know this, but I'm a hospice doc. I work with end of life people. I hold the hands of people who are taking their final breaths, and guess what? I've never heard. I've never heard somebody say, I wish I played it safer. I'm so glad I stayed in the job I hated.
[00:17:30] I'm proud. I never upset anyone by speaking the truth. No, I don't hear those things. You know what I do hear? I never let myself be happy. I waited too long. I've lived my whole life for other people, and I don't even know who I was. Those aren't regrets. They're soul bruises that never healed, and that's what I want you to avoid, not some fabricated fear of making a bold move.
[00:17:55] The truth about what you're risking is this. Let's flip [00:18:00] this. What you think you're risking and what you're actually risking, what you think you're risking is embarrassment, criticism, failure, discomfort. Let that sink in what you're really risking. Your authenticity, your calling, your growth and deep regret.
[00:18:21] Staying stuck doesn't protect you. It pretends to protect you while secretly draining your power, your purpose, and your precious time. Here's another story. When I chose reinvention over regret. Years ago, I was deep in the physician grind and I got offered a leadership promotion at a hospital. Sounds like a dream, right?
[00:18:42] Except every cell in my body was screaming. No, not because I wasn't qualified. Heck, I was overqualified, but because I knew saying yes to that role would mean saying no to the version of me that was finally trying to emerge the one that wrote and spoke and healed with [00:19:00] presence and taught mindset medicine from the soul.
[00:19:03] Not from a system. I turned it down. People were shocked. Why would you say no to that kind of title? Because it would've cost me, myself, and no title was worth that. Was it scary? Oh, hell yes, but I'd rather have butterflies in my gut than bricks in my soul. Here's a coaching moment. I want you to name your regret in advance.
[00:19:26] We're gonna do a little bit of time travel, so if you're capable and safe, close your eyes. Picture yourself 10 years from now. Same job, same daily rhythm, same energy, same self-sacrificing patterns. What's the one thing you wished you'd done differently?
[00:19:50] Now come back to the present. That thing you saw. That's not your fantasy. That's your assignment. And here's the mic drop [00:20:00] moment. Future regret is just today's avoidance with a time delay. You don't have to burn your life down, but you do have to build a bridge to a truer one, one that resonates with your heart.
[00:20:13] All right, here's another hypnotherapy technique called the Future Youth Visualization. It's not rocket science. We're gonna take you onto your future, so let's turn down the noise of the world and turn into the whisper of your future self. Before we dive into this technique, let's talk about why it works and why it's vital to your reinvention.
[00:20:34] This works because it's neuroscience plus spirituality and visualization. Your brain does not know the difference between what's vividly imagined and what's real. I. When you visualize a powerful evolved version of yourself, your nervous system starts to believe that it's already you. It begins to rewire your brain in new patterns, to match the new identity on a soul [00:21:00] level.
[00:21:00] Your future self already exists. She or he is not fiction. It's waiting for your permission to emerge. So let's go meet them. Wherever you are. If you're not driving, let's do this together. Shut your eyes. If you are driving, just listen. If you are operating machinery, stop and pause because it's worth it.
[00:21:22] All right, let's begin. I want you to close your eyes, and I want you to get comfortable letting your shoulders drop. Let your shoulders fall from your ears. Let your jaw soften. Take a deep breath in through your nose, slowly, recently. Sit out through your mouth.
[00:21:46] And take another breath this time. Imagine you're inhaling clarity and exhaling everything you've outgrown.[00:22:00]
[00:22:00] Breathing in truth.
[00:22:05] Breathing out expectations.
[00:22:11] Now imagine it's six months from now, but not any, just six months. This is a version of you who said yes to the true self, the one who stopped shrinking, the one who's chose soul over shoulds. I want you to picture your surroundings. Where are you waking up? What does your space look like?
[00:22:37] How do your mornings feel? What's the energy in your home, in your relationships, and in your body? Now, see that future you? How are you standing? What's your posture, your [00:23:00] face, your presence? Notice how calm and clear you feel You are not hustling, you are embodied. Wake up to that part of you. Look you in the eyes and ask yourself, what did you let go of?
[00:23:25] To come to that version of yourself, what did you start doing? That changed everything. Let the answer rise and don't judge it.
[00:23:43] Finally. Let your future self give you something, a word, an object, or a phrase. This is your anchor, your reminder, your soul seeded for the week ahead,[00:24:00]
[00:24:01] and take one last breath.
[00:24:06] Slowly open your eyes, feeling refreshed and precedent and confident.
[00:24:14] So what came up for you? Don't overthink it. This is deep brain soul communication. It bypasses your inner critic and it speaks in symbols, feelings, and subtle truths. So I want you to take a moment and write down your answers if you can. What did you let go of to be that future self? What did you start doing?
[00:24:37] What gift or message did your future self give you? You don't need to understand it yet. You just need to honor it because your future self isn't a fantasy. He or she's your blueprint. You're not becoming, you are remembering, and every decision you make today, [00:25:00] every pattern, every interrupt, every moment you choose presence over performance is pulling you into the future and into the now.
[00:25:09] So how about we bring that future person into your mornings? Here's your mini homework. Every morning this week, take 30 seconds before checking your phone, closing your eyes, and just say this, show me how to live like that future self today. Let your future self guide your tone, your timing, your boundaries, your joy.
[00:25:33] Let them make the decision. Let them run the show. All right. Let's take just a good breath today. Right now, bringing this to the full circle. Inhale, the truth that's been rising through this episode, and exhale, fear that's been holding you hostage. Now, hear me when I say this. You're not too late, you're not too old, you're not behind, you're [00:26:00] not broken.
[00:26:00] And you are just overdue. Overdue for bold decision. Overdue for aligned boundaries, overdue for joy that doesn't have to be earned with exhaustion and overdue for a life that feels like yours. Not a role you're performing. You don't need another journal prompt. You don't need permission slip from your spouse, your boss, your therapist, your dog, or your piano teacher anymore.
[00:26:25] You need a freaking decision. Reinvention isn't reserved for rock bottom. It's your birthright. And playing small isn't noble. It's numbing. So today I dare you to choose something different. Not perfect, not polished, just truer. Because reinvention doesn't require a grand announcement. It starts with micro moments.
[00:26:46] Moments when you say no without guilt moment, you rest without shame moment. You stop explaining yourself and the moment you remember who you are without the people pleasing costume, [00:27:00] that's your revolution. And it starts now. So step one, look for today's download for your free complimentary worksheet to fit this particular topic.
[00:27:12] This isn't fluff. This is the exact tool that I use with my clients to jumpstart identity transformation. It includes visualization, journaling, micro habits, whatever. You are ready to take action. If you want this, go ahead and check the link below in the show notes. And step number two, please share this episode with one person you love.
[00:27:33] Not because I want likes or followers, but because I wanna reach a hundred people in a hundred days with the mission of mindset medicine. Please send it to a friend who's quietly crumbling. The sister who's too strong for her own good, the guy who doesn't talk about how stuck he feels. And the version of you from six months ago.
[00:27:52] Let's start a reinvention ripple. If this episode lit a fire in you or brought you to tears, I want to hear from you. Come say hi.
