[00:00:00] Dr. Julia Bowlin: Money, energy flows towards people who respect it, who value it, and use it consciously. It flows away from people who fear it, resent it, or treat it carelessly.
[00:00:16] Hey there, beautiful souls. I'm Dr. Julia Bowlin, physician author, hypnotherapist, and the founder of Personal Awareness Medicine. Welcome back to Mindset Medicine, where we dig deep into the messy. Beautiful work of transforming your inner world so that your outer world can finally catch up. Today we're talking about something that makes most people squirm harder than a root canal.
[00:00:36] Without Novocaine money specifically, we're ditching that broke mindset that's been cock blocking your wealth for way too long. Now, you might be wondering, Julia, you're a physician. Why in the hell are you talking about money? Shouldn't I stick to the medical stuff? Well, here's the thing. I'm not a financial advisor, accountant or a money guru, full [00:01:00] transparency, but mindset medicine, that is my jam, and your relationship with money is 90% mindset and maybe 10% strategy.
[00:01:10] Let me get real with you for just a hot minute. Even though I'm a physician, I had some seriously messed up money programming growing up. I was fortunate. My dad was a doctor. We lived in a stable household, and honestly, I never worried about the basic needs of my life, but here's what I absorbed. Money doesn't grow on trees.
[00:01:29] Asking for money was icky, and there was always guilt around wanting more. Then I became a physician, and guess what? I got to hide behind the beautiful bubble of someone else handles the money. You see, I'd see patients I'd provide care, and magically someone in the background managed all those transactions.
[00:01:51] I never had to take the money. I never had to look at the money or ask for the money or think about the money. It was invisible to [00:02:00] me, and that allowed me to focus completely on the patient care. But it also enabled my money avoidance to grow like a tumor. I could do brilliantly in the exam room. I was confident in my diagnosis, completely comfortable saving lives, but ask me to set my own rates or negotiate my own worth.
[00:02:18] Well, I would rather have performed surgery with a butter knife. Sound familiar? I see this with so many of my colleagues and clients. Brilliant, capable professionals who handle life and death situations, but break out in hives when it comes to talking about their financial worth. That's exactly why we're having this conversation today because money blocks aren't about spreadsheets and investment strategies.
[00:02:40] They're about the stories you tell yourself, the beliefs you have inherited, and the neural pathways that fire every time money comes up, and that my friend is absolutely in my wheelhouse. Listen, I get it. Money talk feels icky, especially for us service oriented professionals who've been programmed to believe that caring about [00:03:00] money somehow makes you less noble.
[00:03:02] But here's the truth, bomb, I'm dropping today. Your broke mindset isn't serving anyone. It's not serving you, not your family, and definitely not the people you're trying to help. We're halfway through the year, which means it's time for a financial reality check. Are you where you thought you'd be or are you still playing small undercharging and convincing yourself that struggling financially is somehow more virtuous?
[00:03:27] Today, we're gonna flip the script on that entirely. We're gonna rewire your brain to think like someone who actually deserves wealth, because spoil alert, you absolutely do. So what does a broke mindset really cost you? Let me paint you a picture. You know that voice in your head that says things like, money doesn't grow on trees.
[00:03:48] Rich people are greedy. I should be grateful for what I have. Wanting more makes me selfish that my friend is your broke mindset talking, and it's not just costing you money, it's costing you your dreams, [00:04:00] your impact, and your ability to show up fully for this world. Here's what I see in my practice and my coaching business every single day.
[00:04:09] Brilliant, capable professionals who are literally allergic to their own success. They'll work themselves into the ground helping others, but they won't invest in themselves. They'll give away their expertise for free. I. But feel guilty charging for what they're worth. And here's the kicker. Many of us in healthcare and service professions have been shielded from the money conversation for so long that we never developed healthy money.
[00:04:35] Muscles we're like financial toddlers and grownup bodies trying to navigate complex financial decisions with the emotional maturity of someone who's never had to think about it before. Right now, I want you to think about the last time you undercharged for your services or you said yes to something that didn't pay you what you deserved.
[00:04:55] How'd that feel in your body? Notice that contraction, that [00:05:00] shrinking sensation, that's your nervous system, responding to the energy of lack. Your body literally knows when you are betraying your worth. The broke mindset isn't about money. It's about worthiness. It's the belief that you don't deserve abundance.
[00:05:17] That struggle equals virtue, and that wanting more somehow makes you a bad person. But here's the kicker. When you operate from scarcity, you can't serve from overflow. You are literally trying to pour from an empty cup. The millionaire mindset is not what you think. Now before you roll your eyes and think I'm about to tell you to manifest a Lamborghini, let me clarify something.
[00:05:43] The millionaire mindset isn't about flashy or being materialistic. It's about understanding that money is simply energy. It's a tool that amplifies who you really are. That little piece of paper is just a piece of paper. It's the [00:06:00] belief about it that's important. Let me break down a couple things about how millionaires think differently in four crucial areas that will completely transform your relationship with wealth.
[00:06:10] First, value creation, trading. Time to create impact. The broke mindset. I get paid for hours. I work if I wanna make more money. I need to work more hours. The millionaire mindset, I get paid for the value I create and the problems I solve. My income is limited only by my ability to serve people at a deeper level.
[00:06:34] Here's where most service professionals get it completely wrong. We have been conditioned to think that our worth is tied to time, that we should charge by the hour, the session or the appointment, but millionaires understand that time is finite, but value creation is infinite. Let me give you some examples of how this plays out in healthcare and in service professions.
[00:06:57] Here's a traditional thinking. A therapist sees a [00:07:00] client for one-on-one for $150 an hour to make more money. They need to see more clients or work longer hours. They literally are trading their life force for dollars. But the Millionaire Thinker is that some therapists create group coaching programs that serves 20 people simultaneously.
[00:07:17] This helps develop online courses to help. Thousands or creates a certification program that trains other therapists. They've moved from one-to-one impact to one to many leverage. Now Millionaire Thinking Physicians create a concierge practice with fewer patients paying premium rates for comprehensive care.
[00:07:38] This helps develop wellness programs for corporations, creates educational content that reaches millions by generating passive income. The key shift here is the understanding that people don't pay you for your time. They pay you for your expertise, for your results, and the transformation that you provide.
[00:07:55] A surgeon doesn't get paid $50,000 for a procedure that takes eight hours. [00:08:00] He or she gets paid because they have the skills to save the life, the knowledge to navigate complex anatomy and the experience to handle the complications. I ask you ask yourself, how can I serve more people with the same or less effort?
[00:08:15] How can I package my expertise in a way that creates exponential impact? This isn't about working less. It's about working smarter and creating systems that amplify your gifts. All right, let's talk about wealth building. So investment versus expense. This is a wealth building distinction. The broke mindset is, I can't afford that.
[00:08:38] It's too expensive. I need to save money by doing everything myself. The millionaire mindset is what's the return on the investment? How can this help me grow, serve better, or create more value? What's the cost of not investing in this? Haha, this is where I see so many brilliant professionals sabotage their own success.[00:09:00]
[00:09:00] They'll spend $200,000 on medical school or advanced degrees without blinking, but they'll hesitate to invest $2,000 in a business coach or a marketing program that could absolutely transform their practice. Let me break this down in a couple real examples. Expense thinking that's $5,000 certification program is too expensive.
[00:09:22] I'll figure it out myself. That's expensive thinking. Investment thinking is if the certification helps me serve my clients better and allows me to charge $200 more per session, I'll recoup my investment in 25 sessions. Everything after that is pure profit and better outcomes for my clients. Another expense thinking would be I can't afford to hire a virtual assistant for a thousand dollars a month.
[00:09:49] Investment thinking would be if a virtual assistant frees up 20 hours a month that I can spend seeing clients at $200 an hour, that's $4,000 more in additional [00:10:00] revenue. The assistant pays for themselves and gives me $3,000 of extra income monthly. These are nice examples. These are mindset shifts. Let's talk about another one.
[00:10:11] Expense thinking. I don't need that. Fancy equipment or software. The basic version is fine. Investment thinking is how will this tool help me serve my clients better? Will it save time, improve my outcomes, or enhance client experience? What's the lifetime value of the clients I might lose by not having these tools?
[00:10:33] You see millionaires also understand the concept of opportunity cost. Every hour you spend doing $20 per hour tasks, like scheduling, bookkeeping, basic administration is an hour. You're not spending doing $200 per hour activities like seeing clients, creating programs, or building relationships. Here's a practical exercise.
[00:10:56] Take a little time and calculate your true hourly worth based upon your [00:11:00] desired. Annual income. If you wanna make $200,000 per year, working 40 hours a week or 50 weeks, your time is worth a hundred dollars an hour. Now look at everything you're doing that's worth less than that, and ask, should I be doing this?
[00:11:16] Or should I invest in someone else to handle it? Tell you what. Having a a home helper could be worth it, right? Getting somebody to clean the house, that's two hours you could get back where you could be doing higher leverage work. For example,
[00:11:34] if stress and overwhelm or that relentless inner critic had been running the show, it's time to take back control. You don't need another motivational quote or a feel good pep talk. You need a system, a tool, something that actually works when life gets messy. That's exactly why I created mindset medicine worksheets.
[00:11:52] No fluff, no filler. Just proven strategies that are powerfully designed to help you rewire your thoughts for clarity and [00:12:00] confidence, break the cycle of overwhelming minutes. Set boundaries that stick without the guilt and turn stress into focus and action. This isn't about theory, it's about real transformation.
[00:12:12] And the best part, this podcast comes with a worksheet designed specifically for what you're learning today. No more wondering how to apply this. It's all mapped out for you. And if you're ready to stop spinning your wheels and start making real shifts, grab today's worksheet below because life's too short to stay stuck.
[00:12:30] Check out the episode specific worksheet for today's podcast below.
[00:12:38] All right. Let's talk about the energy that attracts wealth. This is an abundance versus scarcity conversation. The broke mindset would say there's not enough to go around. If someone else succeeds, it means less for me, or I need to hoard my resources and my opportunities. The millionaire mindset would be, success is not a zero [00:13:00] sum game.
[00:13:01] Other people's success expands the field of possibility for everyone, and collaboration creates more wealth and competition. This is perhaps the most transformative shift you can make, and it's where real magic happens. Scarcity thinking, literally repels money and opportunities. Bingo. Listen to that.
[00:13:20] When you think you are in scarcity, this type of thinking literally repels money and opportunities for you while abundance thinking magnetizes. And here's how this shows up in real life. I'm gonna give you some examples. Here is scarcity and action. For example, you see another person in your field, they're doing well, and your first thought is they're taking all the good people, the good patients, the good clients.
[00:13:44] There won't be anything left for me. I. You start competing on price badmouthing competitors or trying to copy what they're doing, but abundance in action is you see the same successful practitioner or person or business person and you think, wow, they're [00:14:00] proof that there's a market for what I do, and I wonder what I could learn from them.
[00:14:03] Maybe we could collaborate or refer clients to each other. Big difference there, isn't it? Here's another scarcity in action. A client mentions they're also working with another professional and you feel threatened or jealous. You might even try to convince 'em that they don't need anyone else versus abundance in action is you celebrate that your client or friend, or colleague is investing in themselves from multiple angles.
[00:14:26] You might even refer them to other professionals who can support their journey in ways that you can't bonus, right? Here's another one. Scarcity. You keep your knowledge and strategy secret, afraid if you share them, others will steal your clients or your success. Versus abundance. You freely share your knowledge like I'm doing now, knowing that the more I give or the more you give, the more you receive.
[00:14:50] You understand that your unique combination of skills, personality, and approach can't be replicated. The energy of abundance literally changes how you show up for the world. When you operate [00:15:00] from abundance, you make decisions that are confident rather than from fear. You attract clients or people or. Or colleagues or friends who value your quality over your price, and you create partnerships and collaborations that multiply your impact.
[00:15:13] As a result, you can feel genuinely happy for other people's success, which raises your own vibration. Now you can take inspired action rather than desperate action. Here is a practical way for you to shift into abundance. Start celebrating other people's success in your field. When you see someone doing well, instead of feeling threatened, send them a congratulatory message.
[00:15:36] Share the content, refer clients and people to them when appropriate. Watch how this shifts your energy and what starts to flow back at you. All right. Let's talk a little bit about pricing your transformation, but not your time. In other words, you get paid for transformation, not the time that you spent.
[00:15:52] This is what I call worth. Versus work, the broke mindset. I should charge based on how hard I work or [00:16:00] how much time I spend. If I charge too much, I'm being greedy. The millionaire mindset I. I charge based upon the value I create and the transformation I help provide. The prices reflect the investment of my clients are making in their own growth and results.
[00:16:15] This is where most service professionals completely undervalue themselves and it's costing them millions in their careers. You've been programmed to think that your worth is tied to your effort, your hours, or some arbitrarily. Fair quote, price, but millionaires understand that they don't pay for effort, they pay for results.
[00:16:36] Let me give you some perspective shifting examples of this. Again, time-based thinking is, I spent an hour with this client. I should charge $150 value-based thinking in that hour. I help this client break through a limiting belief that's been holding them back for 20 years. What's that worth? What would they pay to have their life transform?
[00:16:58] Effort based thinking, [00:17:00] the solution came to me easily, so I shouldn't charge that much for it. Value-based thinking, the solution came to me easily because I spent years developing my expertise, the clients paying for my ability to see what they can't see, and for me to provide solutions that they couldn't find on their own.
[00:17:17] Yeah. How's that one? Comparison based thinking, I can't charge more than other people in my field. Value-based thinking. I'm not other people. I have unique combination of skills, experience, and an approach. I'm not competing on price, I'm competing on value. Here's what I want you to understand. Your clients aren't paying for your time.
[00:17:40] They're busy. They're paying for years of your training and experience. They're paying for your ability to see patterns they can't see for your skill in guiding them through transformation and the result and outcomes that you alone can help them achieve. The confidence and peace of mind that comes from working with an expert [00:18:00] is huge.
[00:18:01] They're paying for that. They're also paying for the time and frustration. You're saving them by providing them solutions. Think about it this way. If you wave a magic wand instantly and solve somebody's biggest problems, what is that worth to them? That's closer to your true value than whatever you're currently charging.
[00:18:20] I once had a client who was struggling with pricing or coaching service. She was charging a hundred dollars a session because that seemed fair. But when we calculated the value that she was providing, helping executives reduce stress, improve performance, avoiding burnout, we realized that she was literally saving companies hundreds of thousands of dollars in turnover, sick days, and lost productivity.
[00:18:41] She raised her rates to $500 per hour, and then had a waiting list within a month. The key is to stop thinking about what you do and start thinking about what your clients get. Stop focusing on the process and start focusing on the outcome. Your worth isn't determined by how hard you work. It's [00:19:00] determined by how much value you create.
[00:19:03] So how about we do a little wealth anchor? Let me teach you a powerful technique I call anchoring. I've used as many times that can help you embody the millionaire energy instantly. An anchor is a neurologic trigger that connects a physical gesture to an emotional state. Think about it like Pavlos Bill.
[00:19:20] But instead of making dog salivate, we're training your nervous system to access confidence and abundance on command. And here's how it works. I'm gonna help you find your peak state. We're going to amplify a feeling. We're gonna create an anger. We're gonna test it and repeat. So here we go. Think about a time when you felt absolutely confident about money.
[00:19:40] Maybe you received a bonus, you closed a big deal, and you felt genuinely abundant. If you can't think of this personal experience, imagine how it would feel to be completely financially free. No worries about money. Now I want you to really dive into that memory. What do you see? What do [00:20:00] you hear? How does your body feel?
[00:20:02] Let's make it vivid and intense. Think about how confident you feel the energy that freedom, joy. And while you're in this peak state, create a unique physical gesture, maybe holding your thumb and index finger together, placing your hand on your heart, and just hold this gesture for 10 to 15 seconds, holding and folding into that feeling of abundance.
[00:20:26] I.
[00:20:34] Slowly break your state by thinking about something neutral. Then fire your anchor by repeating this gesture. Click your fingers, tap your chest. Whatever it is, you should feel that confident, abundant energy return. Practice it daily to strengthen this neural pathway. This works because your nervous system does not distinguish between a real or vividly imagined experience.
[00:20:56] By repeatedly pairing the physical anchor with a feeling of abundance, you are [00:21:00] literally rewiring your brain to access that state whenever you need it. Like before a sales call, a negotiation, a crazy meaning or a difficult conversation, or any money related conversations. Alright, we're gonna get real about some money blocks that people have, and I'm gonna break them down a little bit to help people who are in the service oriented industry or people who are just struggling and may feel like they're stuck financially in the mediocrity world.
[00:21:26] Alright, let's start with a save your complex. You believe you need to save everyone at your own expense or the imposter syndrome. You don't feel qualified to charge premium prices even though you've had years of training and experience. Maybe you have the martyrdom myth. You like a martyr all the time.
[00:21:46] You've been conditioned to believe that the struggle equals virtue. So financial ease means something's wrong or unearned. What about the scarcity story? You operate from the belief that there's not enough to go around. So taking [00:22:00] more means everyone else gets less. Alright. I want you to identify which one of those resonates most strongly with you.
[00:22:07] It might have been all of them. Don't judge it. Just notice it. Where you in the savior, where you need to save everyone at your own expense. The imposter where you don't feel qualified. Even though you've had years of training the martyrdom, you're conditioned to believe that struggle equals virtue or scarcity.
[00:22:26] The belief that there's not enough to go around. So taking more means somebody else has less. So I want you to identify which one of these resonates the most with you. Don't judge it. Just notice it. Awareness is the first step to transformation. You've heard me say this before in personal awareness medicine.
[00:22:42] Now ask yourself, how is this serving me? What is that belief doing to serve me? What's it costing me? Be brutally honest. Sometimes our blocks feel protective, but they're actually a prison bar that we've built around our [00:23:00] own potential. Let's get a little technical and talk about the wealth magnet blueprint.
[00:23:05] These are practical strategies that will help you get some specific mindset shifts to help you transform you from someone who struggles with money to someone who magnetizes it. Shift number one. I want you to go from time-based beliefs to value based pricing. Stop charging by the hour. Start transforming and charging for that.
[00:23:27] You've had years of training, you have intuition. You have your ability to see what others can't. That is what people are paying for. Shift number two, we're gonna go from scarcity to stewardship. Reframe wealth as a responsibility. I. Seriously reframe wealth as a responsibility. The more you have, the more good you can do in the world.
[00:23:52] Your financial success isn't selfish. It's service. You can now give back. Create programs, support other [00:24:00] offer scholarships that stewardship. Shift number three, go from guilt to gratitude. Instead of feeling guilty about wanting more, feel grateful for the opportunity to expand money in the hands of good people creates positive change in shift Number four, let's go from comparison to collaboration.
[00:24:22] Stop seeing other successful people as competition and start seeing them as proof of what's possible. Their success expands the field of possibility for everyone. I would like to do a future self visualization for you. I want you to start thinking about a person who embodies a version of yourself who already has the wealth and success that you want.
[00:24:43] It's based on the principle that your subconscious mind is more likely to move towards a future that you can clearly envision. So let's do this. Let's do a future you visualization. So here's the process. We're gonna get comfortable. We're gonna do a little time travel, we're gonna embody some energy, we're gonna [00:25:00] receive some wisdom, and then we're gonna bring it back.
[00:25:02] You ready? I. Alright, let's do this. If you are in a safe space, I would like you to find a quiet place where you're not having to operate machinery or driving a place that you'll feel comfortable. And I want you just be in a place where you won't be interrupted. If you can and you're comfortable, close your eyes and just take three deep breaths
[00:25:26] and why you're doing these three deep breaths. Just allow your body to relax with each exhale.
[00:25:37] Imagine yourself one year from now having achieved your financial goals. See yourself clearly. How are you dressed? How are you carrying yourself? What does your environment look like? Now, let's embody this energy step into that future version of yourself. How does it feel to [00:26:00] have financial freedom? What emotions are present?
[00:26:04] Is it confidence, peace, excitement. Really feel these emotions in your body. You at your financial goals. Now ask this future version of yourself. What did you do differently to create the success? What beliefs did you change and what actions did you take? Listen for your own answers.
[00:26:34] What did you do differently to create the success? What beliefs did you change? What actions did you take? And before opening your eyes, make a commitment to embody one quality of this future self Today? Maybe it's confidence, decision making ability, or the way you value time. This technique works because it helps your subconscious mind create a clear target to move towards.
[00:26:59] When you can [00:27:00] feel and embody the energy of your successful future self, you naturally start making decisions and taking actions that align with reality. I. Here's something they don't teach you in your medical school, advanced degrees or business schools. Money, energy flows towards people who respect it, who value it, and use it consciously.
[00:27:18] It flows away from people who fear it, resent it, or treat it carelessly. Think about your most financial successful people, you know, I bet they have a healthy relationship with money. They're probably not obsessed with money. They're not afraid of it either. They understand that money's a tool for creating the life and impact that they desire.
[00:27:37] This is why your mindset work is so incredibly crucial. You can have all the business strategies in the world, but if your energy around money is constricted, you will unconsciously sabotage your own success. You'll undercharge, overgive or find ways to push money away because deep down you don't believe you deserve it.
[00:27:57] So I'd like to give you a few practical [00:28:00] action steps. Let's make this real with some concrete actions that you can take this week. First of all, one, audit your money language. Pay attention to how you talk about money for the next three days. Notice phrases like, I can't afford it, or Money doesn't matter.
[00:28:15] Start replacing them with empowering alternatives like I'm choosing to invest elsewhere, or Money is a tool for good. Next. Number two, calculate your true worth. This was life-changing for me. I want you to add up all your education, your training, your certifications, years of experiences, and put a dollar value on it.
[00:28:37] Most service professionals are shocked when they realize they've invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in their expertise. Next. Number three, I want you to practice receiving. Yes. Practice receiving this week. Accept every compliment, every offer of help. Every small gift without deflecting or immediately [00:29:00] reciprocating your ability to receive money is directly connected to your ability to receive in general.
[00:29:06] And next, raise your standards. Identify one area where you've been accepting less than you deserve. Maybe it's your rates, your working conditions, or the clients you accept. Make one small change this week to honor your worth and accept what you do deserve. I would like you to experience the ripple effect of your wealth.
[00:29:27] Here's what I want you to understand. Your financial success isn't about you when you step into your worth and start earning what you deserve, you give permission for every other service oriented professional to do the same. You become living proof that you can care deeply about helping others and be financially abundant.
[00:29:45] Hmm. Think about the impact you could have with more resources. The programs you could create, the people you could help, the causes you could support. Your wealth becomes a force for good in the world. And let's be honest, you can't serve from an [00:30:00] empty cup when you are constantly worried about money, stressed out about bills, or being resentful, about being undervalued.
[00:30:07] That energy affects everyone around you. Your clients feel it, your family feels it, and you definitely feel it. Yeah. So let's go into conclusion here. Listen, you're a beautiful soul. And it's time to stop playing small with your finances. The world needs what you have to offer, but it needs you to value it first.
[00:30:26] Your broke mindset isn't protecting you. It's limiting your impact, and it's keeping you stuck in a cycle of struggle that serves no one. You have permission to want more. You have permission to charge what you're worth. You have permission to be wealthy while still being a good person who cares about others.
[00:30:42] In fact, the world needs more conscious, caring people with resources. Start today. Use that wealth anchor when you're setting your prices. Visualize your abundant future self when you're making financial decisions. And remember, every time you honor your worth, you're not changing your life, you're changing the [00:31:00] game for all of us.
[00:31:01] Your bank account is about to become a reflection of your true value. And trust me, that's going to be a beautiful thing to see. Be happy, be healthy, and be fulfilled.
