Alright my friends Welcome back to another episode of mindset medicine with doctor Julia Jingles. If you're new here let me introduce myself I'm a physician author coach and hypnotherapist, and your go to guide for breaking out a mental funks, and stepping into your most powerful rounded and energized self. Think of me as the person who hands you the map when life starts feeling a little bit like a maze. And today we're diving head first into a topic that sneaks up on so many people around this time of year I don't know where you're from but I'm from Ohio and it gets me every year. You know that feeling when it gets dark around four thirty or five PM, and suddenly your entire personality is replaced by a blanket of carbs and an existential crisis.
Yep. We're talking about seasonal affective disorder, a k a, sad. And listen, the name is almost insulting right Sad. Like thanks for the obvious diagnosis science, but Couldn't we have called it something like winter funk syndrome or sunlight deficiency chaos? Well regardless of the name the experience really is real.
But the good news is you're not at the mercy of it. You do not have to suffer through the season like a grumpy vitamin d deficient gremlin. Today we're gonna break down what's actually happening in your brain and your body when sad kicks in We're gonna unpack the sneaky reasons why it happens in the first place. And more importantly I'm gonna give you my top three power moves to melt away the blues and take back your energy. Plus you know I love giving the next level transformation I'll be sharing two of my favorite hypnotherapy techniques to help you reset your brain.
Lift your mood and shake off that sluggish wintery fog. So grab your tea coffee, or if you're really embracing the winter aesthetic, go get your hot chocolate with way too many marshmallows in it. Oh I love those little marshmallows. Let's get into this right now. What is seasonal affective disorder also known as sad And why does it turn otherwise functioning human beings into half asleep, sugar craving and low energy zombies…
SAD is a type of depression, and it's tied to the changing of the seasons And it usually hits hardest in the fall and the gray season And in the winter when there's less sunlight, symptoms range from mild Like I just don't know like I feel like I'm just like feel like myself What is this? Vibes to full blown I hate everything. Why do I exist? And I'm in an existential spiral. So we're talking about low energy, overeating especially carbs, irritability and mood swings, and a lack of motivation.
Like, I just sat down, and now I need a nap kind of tired. Or if your grocery cart has turned into a carb sanctuary you're not alone. One minute you feel fine and the next minute you're questioning all of your life's choices. Even things like do I feel like anything? Feels like too much ever So Let's just get one thing straight.
You're not lazy. It's not because you're not trying hard enough It's actual science behind this and I wanna break it down so you know exactly what's going on in your brain Right. You're not lazy. It's not because you're not trying hard enough It's actual science behind this and I wanna break it down so you know exactly what's going on in your brain. Three reasons why seasonal affective disorder really happens.
One is melatonin overload. Your brain thinks it's time to hibernate. You're not a bear, but you feel like a bear. Ever feel like you could sleep twelve hours and you still wake up exhausted? Well that's melatonin.
That's the hormone that regulates sleep. The problem is is when there's less sunlight your body thinks, oh, we must be preparing for winter hibernation. So it floods your system with way too much melatonin. And guess what happens when you have too much melatonin? You're drowsy.
You're sluggish and you're basically useless before noon. So the quick fix is morning sunlight. If you can find it Morning sunlight exposure tells your brain to wake up. More on that in a little bit. Next is vitamin d deficiency This is the sunlight crash.
Sunlight is basically nature's anti depressant. When we get enough of it our body makes vitamin d. Which helps serotonin the feel good neurotransmitter…
Less sun equals less vitamin d equals less serotonin because it takes a dive And when does serotonin take a dive, So does your mood your energy and your overall vibe It's science and it's kind of brutal early. So the quick fix is to get strategic about your vitamin d. So hang on I've got you We'll talk more about this in a minute. Next is circadian rhythm chaos. Your internal clock is screwed Your body has a built in schedule like a Swiss watch.
When the days get shorter it's like someone took a hammer to the gears. Your sleep is disrupted. Your energy levels get unpredictable and you just feel…off. Sound familiar? The quick fix is resetting your rhythm with mindset medicine.
And yes I'm bringing in my favorite hypnotherapy techniques for this one. So there's three ways to melt away your seasonal blues. Light therapy your portable sun fix. Step one fake it till you make it. With light, I recommend a high quality light therapy box.
Place it where you actually will use it your coffee station your desk or wherever you're hanging, and give yourself twenty minutes a day. This little hack wakes up your brain, regulates your melatonin and it boosts your energy fast. Next is body movement. Your natural antidepressant is body movement It gets the blood flowing. And I know I know.
When you're tired and grumpy exercise sounds like the worst idea ever. But hear me out Just ten to fifteen minutes of movement even a brisk walk outside, since oxygen to your brain, boosts endorphins and tells your body we're alive and thriving. Bonus points if you get outside because it's a double mood boost between vitamin d and movement. Next is hypnotherapy. Let's reset your brain's winter blues mode.
Alright. Shut your eyes if you're safe and not operating machinery. Take a breath in…
Imads in your snowman. And a warm sun beam is melting away the tension one part at a time. Your forehead relax your jaws relax, your shoulders fall away from your ears all the way down to your toes And by the time You are fully melted. Your body has reset itself at a stress mode…
Now picture yourself in March. The sun is shiny. You're light and happy you feel this spring energy. Now bring that feeling into your body right now. Your brain doesn't know the difference between imagination and reality.
So let's trick it into getting out of the winter slump. Before winter is even over. Use that visualization. Magic has shown it works. Alright my friend There you have it Seasonal effective disorder might be a thing.
Also known as sad but you are not powerless against it With light therapy, movement, a little hypnotherapy magic, you can shift your energy and reclaim your joy. Let's be real If discipline and willpower were enough we'd all be crushing our goals effortlessly. But here's the truth Your habits aren't just about what you do They're about how your mind is wired And if you're tired of falling into the same old cycles distraction burnout and self sabotage then it's time to break the pattern…at the source.
